Consolidate Your Student Loans

Jessica Martinsen

If you have multiple federal education student loans, Federal Family Education Loans (FFEL) and/or Perkins Loans (you must hold at least one Direct Federal Loan other than the Perkins Loans to consolidate), you may be able to consolidate your loans into one Direct Consolidation loan in order to qualify for the student loan forgiveness program, PSLF.

A Direct Consolidation Loan will have a fixed interest rate based on the average of the interest rates on the loans being consolidated.

Why do my loans need to be consolidated?

In order to enroll in most of the Income-Driven Repayment Programs, you must consolidate your loans. You must enroll in an Income-Driven Repayment Plan to qualify for PSLF (Public Student Loan Forgiveness).

How to apply:

Submit the Federal Direct Consolidation Loan Application and Promissory Note online via Federal Student Aid. You will choose which loans you want to consolidate and with which servicer. You will then choose the repayment plan you want. (Chipper can help you decide automatically which repayment option is best for you through our Repayment Widget.

After answering a few personal questions, accessing the IRS website to retrieve your income information, agreeing to the terms and conditions, followed by confirming the loans that you want to consolidate and agreeing to repay the new Direct Consolidation Loan, you will then have a single monthly payment on the new Direct Consolidation Loan.

How long will it take?

The entire Loan Consolidation process must be completed in a single session. Most people complete the process in less than 30 minutes. If you are consolidating for the purpose of student loan forgiveness, the Federal Loan Servicer or Not For Profit Loan Servicer you select will send you information on the steps you should follow to be considered for loan forgiveness programs.

How do I know which servicer to pick?

Your loan servicer was already assigned to you by the Federal Student Aid. Choose the servicer that already handles your student loans.
